How to Check Your TREC CE Hours and See What Courses You Still Need

Not sure how many continuing education hours you have completed or which classes you still need before renewing your Texas real estate license?

The Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) provides online tools that allow real estate agents and brokers to review their education records and track renewal requirements.

Whether your license expires next month or next year, checking your TREC continuing education hours can help you avoid duplicate classes, identify missing requirements, and prepare for renewal.

TL;DR: How to Check Your TREC CE Hours

To check your Texas real estate continuing education hours:

  1. Visit the TREC website.

  2. Open the License Holder Search.

  3. Search for your name or real estate license number.

  4. Select your license record.

  5. Review your education history and completed courses.

  6. If available, open Renewal Education Information to see which requirements remain incomplete.

You can also track your CE hours through TREC's REALM Portal.

Most Texas real estate sales agents completing a regular CE renewal need 18 hours, including Legal Update I, Legal Update II, three hours of contract-related coursework, and elective education.

Brokers and delegated supervisors have an additional Broker Responsibility course requirement within those same 18 hours.

Where Can You Check Your TREC CE Hours?

The best place to begin is the official Texas Real Estate Commission website.

Official website: https://www.trec.texas.gov/

TREC maintains public licensing and education records for Texas real estate professionals.

Its online tools can help you:

  • Verify your real estate license status.

  • Find your license expiration date.

  • Review courses reported to TREC.

  • Identify the subject areas associated with completed courses.

  • Check the education requirements for your upcoming renewal.

You do not need to rely exclusively on old course certificates or emails to determine which classes have been recorded.

However, keeping your completion records is still a good practice in case you need to resolve a reporting issue.

Step 1: Find Your Texas Real Estate License

Go to the TREC website and locate the License Holder Search.

Enter your name or license number to find your record.

If multiple people have similar names, use your license number or other identifying information to make sure you select the correct record.

Once you find your license, open the details.

Your public license record can provide information such as your license type, current status, expiration date, and education history.

Step 2: Review Your Completed CE Courses

Locate the education history section of your license record.

TREC's education history includes information such as:

  • Course completion date

  • Course number

  • Course name

  • Education subject category

  • Education provider

  • Credit hours

Pay particular attention to the subject category.

Completing 18 hours of coursework does not automatically mean you have satisfied every required category.

For example, an agent could have enough total hours but still be missing Legal Update II or the required contract-related education.

The important question is not simply how many hours you have completed. It is whether the correct hours are credited toward your renewal.

Step 3: Check Your Renewal Education Requirements

TREC also offers a feature called Renewal Education Information.

When available for your license, this feature provides a clearer picture of your current renewal requirements.

To find it:

  1. Go to the TREC homepage.

  2. Search for your real estate license.

  3. Open your license record.

  4. Select the Renewal Education Information link, if available.

  5. Review the requirements shown for your renewal period.

The feature identifies required courses, accumulated CE hours, and education that TREC is crediting toward your renewal.

Important: TREC's published guidance describes this renewal education feature as available to sales agents and brokers within 90 days of their license expiration date. If you are outside that window, you can still review your education history and use the REALM Portal's CE tracking tools.

How Many CE Hours Do Texas Real Estate Agents Need?

For a standard Texas real estate license renewal, sales agents must complete 18 hours of TREC-approved continuing education during the license period.

The requirements are divided into specific categories.

Required CE Course Credit Hours
Legal Update I 4
Legal Update II 4
Contract-related coursework 3
Elective continuing education 7
Total 18

Legal Update I and Legal Update II are mandatory components.

Agents must also complete three hours of approved contract-related coursework.

The remaining seven hours may be satisfied with eligible elective CE courses.

If your broker has formally designated you as a supervisor, your 18 hours must include the six-hour Broker Responsibility Course, leaving one additional elective hour.

What About Texas Real Estate Brokers?

Texas brokers also need 18 hours of CE for a standard renewal, but the course combination is different.

Beginning January 1, 2026, the six-hour Broker Responsibility Course is required for renewing brokers regardless of whether they sponsor sales agents.

Required CE Course Credit Hours
Legal Update I 4
Legal Update II 4
Contract-related coursework 3
Broker Responsibility 6
Elective continuing education 1
Total 18

This distinction matters when selecting a CE package.

A sales agent who is not a delegated supervisor generally has a different elective requirement than a broker.

How Do You Know Which CE Courses You Still Need?

Start by comparing your TREC education record with the required course categories.

For example, suppose your current renewal record shows:

  • Legal Update I: Completed

  • Legal Update II: Not completed

  • Contract-related coursework: Completed

  • Elective CE: Three hours completed

You would ordinarily still need:

  • Legal Update II: Four hours

  • Additional elective CE: Four hours

That equals eight hours of remaining education.

This example assumes you are a sales agent who is not required to complete Broker Responsibility.

Before enrolling, verify the actual remaining requirements shown in your TREC record. The example is not a substitute for TREC's determination.

What If Your Completed CE Course Is Not Showing Up?

If you recently completed a course and do not see it in your education history, the credit may still be processing.

TREC's REALM Portal guidance advises allowing approximately 24–48 hours for course credit to appear.

If your course remains missing:

  1. Confirm that you successfully completed the course.

  2. Check the completion date and your information with the provider.

  3. Ask the education provider whether your completion record has been submitted.

  4. Keep a copy of your completion documentation.

  5. Contact TREC if the issue remains unresolved.

Education providers report qualifying course completion information to TREC.

Checking your record before your expiration date gives you time to resolve any discrepancies.

Can You Take the Same TREC CE Course Twice?

Generally, you should not expect to receive duplicate CE credit for the same approved course during a single license period.

TREC Rule §535.92 limits credit for repeating the same course during the applicable period.

Before purchasing a class, review your education history and compare the course number and title.

This is especially important if you have completed courses from several different education providers.

What Happens If You Don't Complete CE Before Your License Expires?

Missing your CE deadline can create additional expense and complications.

Under TREC's published renewal guidance, an eligible license holder renewing in active status without having completed required CE by the expiration date may be charged a $200 CE deferral fee.

The deferral allows an additional 60 days to finish the required education while remaining active, subject to the applicable requirements.

Late renewal follows different rules, and an inactive license does not authorize real estate brokerage activity.

TREC recommends completing CE at least 10 days before your license expiration date to allow time for processing.

First-Time Sales Agent Renewal: SAE Is Different From CE

If you are renewing your Texas sales agent license for the first time, the usual 18-hour CE checklist may not apply.

First-time renewing sales agents generally fall under Sales Apprentice Education (SAE) requirements.

TREC requires a total of 270 qualifying education hours, including the original licensing education, plus the required Legal Update I and Legal Update II courses.

Check your SAE requirements directly with TREC before purchasing a standard CE renewal package.

Make Your Next Texas Real Estate License Renewal Easier

A simple renewal routine can prevent unnecessary confusion.

90 days before your expiration date:

  • Confirm your license expiration date.

  • Check your CE history.

  • Review your renewal education requirements.

  • Make a list of missing courses.

30 days before expiration:

  • Complete outstanding coursework.

  • Confirm the provider has reported your hours.

  • Review your TREC record again.

At least 10 days before expiration:

  • Aim to have all required courses completed.

  • Verify that your education has been credited.

  • Follow TREC's renewal instructions.

Remember that completing your CE requirements and submitting your license renewal are separate parts of the renewal process.
